How Do College Football Playoffs Work?

The 2024-25 College Football Playoffs now feature a 12-team format, adding more excitement to the postseason. The top four teams in the final rankings skip the first round and go straight to the quarterfinals, giving them extra time to rest and prepare.

Teams ranked 5 through 12 play in the first round on December 20-21, 2024. These games will take place at the home stadiums of the higher-seeded teams, creating an exciting atmosphere for fans.

First-round winners move on to face the top four teams in the quarterfinals, held at traditional bowl sites on December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025. The semifinals and championship game follow at neutral venues.

This new format makes the playoffs more competitive and gives more teams a real chance at the title.
